United Nations representative: Peter Metcalf throws in the towel

Peter Metcalf, the U.N diplomat, becoming almost a “zanatany” (native of Madagascar), throws in the towel after several attempts to contribute to putting an end to the crisis in Madagascar.

Appointed as the head of the Department of Political Affairs, established last November in the U.N System in Madagascar, Peter Metcalf left the Great Island on July 31. His successor would be there by August 8, 2011. Reliable sources have indicated that Peter Metcalf, a diplomat who has become a “Zanatany”, given his long stay in Madagascar, decided to throw in the towel right in the middle of the crisis resolution process. The sources indicated that Mr Metcalf judged it would be very difficult to bring contributions to the resolution of the crisis in Madagascar because the leaders of the HAT regime contemptuously continue to ignore the international community.

Peter Metcalf knows Madagascar well. He assured the transition at the head of the United Nations System in Madagascar between the departure of Xavier Leus and the arrival of Fatma Samoura. As the head of the Department of Political Affairs, he contributed to the establishment of the SADC’s Liaison Office in Madagascar. He has conducted successive consultations with various political parties and figures in Madagascar in order to help find solutions to the crisis.
