Before President Ravalomanana departed for France, his political allies insisted on bringing up the need for the presidential movement to restore order within its midst. As soon as he returns, the issue would figure among the ones at the top of his agenda.

Presidential tidal wave – the aftermath

The presidential movement, obviously bruised, and cracked, but not totally broken, finds itself compelled to reexamine its structure. For the past few weeks, some members, while still claiming to be part of the leadership camp, have been sending some rather mixed signals, bordering, at times, on radical opposition. Unsurprisingly, there are those who feel compelled to demand an emergency meeting of those who still consider themselves within the Malagasy President?s political camp. According to the organizers, the meeting will give them an opportunity to clearly define which political entities are currently part of the presidential movement, and what their resulting obligations will be. Some would like to fine-tune the statutes so that the movement does not become, a little like what it is today, a virtual hornets? nest, or a pod of hungry frenzied sharks, out for blood.

Congressman Jao Jean of Antsohihy, an RPSD member, was among the first ones to bring up this need for getting things in order. He recently called on Senate President Rajemison Rakotomaharo to act as mediator/peace maker because, as the President?s right hand man since the 2002 street protests, he is well positioned to successfully carry out such a mandate.

If the idea of reexamining the structure, and methodologies of the presidential movement is becoming a priority, it is essentially due to the undertakings of the former presidential support committee (KMMR). Its current leaders continue to crisscross various regions of the island nation, sharply criticizing the new leadership. Many people are wondering whose side the KMMR is on, even though its members continue to maintain that they are, not yet, part of the opposition. Thus, it is not surprising that the possibility of an emergency meeting between the various political entities which make up the presidential movement, is often brought up by those within President Ravalomanana?s inner circle.
