The international Contact Group (ICG), stimulated by the president of the African Union's Commission, Jean Ping, is keen on definitely breaking the deadlock in the Malagasy crisis. The international community is moving forward with the implementation the agreements signed in Maputo as a solution. The objectors to the international mediation are, meanwhile, demonstrating and get dispersed.

Resolution of the crisis: the ICG and the anti-Maputo in Anosy

The ICG is hasting the pace and intends to make Malagasy politicians face up to their responsibilities to drive the country out of from the political crisis. “The crisis is Malagasy and the solution will be Malagasy but with the support of the international community “, reiterated Jean Ping, president of the African Union’s Commission. The goal remains the Great Isle’s return to constitutional order by means of free and transparent elections.

The international Contact Group has largely grown. Joaquim Chissano’s leadership as SADC representative having been questioned by the Rajoelina mobility and by the de facto authorities again, Jean Ping is taking over. The international community is more than ever represented through regional organizations as the COI, the SADC and the COMESA, and, of course, the AU.

The United Nations are also part of the game through representatives the Security Council’s member countries, namely France’s Secretary of State for Cooperation, Alain Joyandet and the American State Department diplomat, Philip Carter. The European Union has sent its former ambassador in Madagascar Jean Claude Boidin. The international organization of the French speaking countries is still part of the joint mediation team.

“The ICG is holding this meeting with the four mobilities to display the international community’s solidarity with the Malagasy population” declared Edem Kodjo, from the OIF. “It is an important meeting “, emphasized Jean Ping. According to the president of the African Union’s Commission “the international community will neither turn away from Madagascar nor abandon it”.

Right in front the Carlton hotel, objectors to the international mediation are demonstrating to display their position to the diplomats meeting in the Carlton, and to the population. These Rajoelina mobility’s partisans have not yet recovered from the U-turn operated by the TGV. The grouping for the defence of national sovereignty “opposes foreign interfering”. According to Gabriel Rabearimanna, it is the GIC that makes decisions for Madagascar. “Its presence does nothing but exacerbating the crisis further more”, he stated.

The anti-Maputo demonstration has been dispersed by the police forces. “SADC OUT – ICG OUT “, the streamers have been confiscated. These demonstrators, who are part of the Rajoelina mobility, have also been entitled to tear gazes. Rajaonah Andrianjaka, the economic theoretician, so far militating for the break-up with financial backers, can hardly believe it. He is therefore accusing Andry Rajoelina of having become a liberty predator, no better than the former presidents.

“There are some of us who are entitled to claim loud that they rebuke the Maputo agreements… we do not accept repressive force either”, desperately said Rajaonah Andrianjaka. The parties Monima, AKFM, and the Otrik’afo association are standing on the fore front of the anti-Maputo side, together with, indeed, the defenders of Prime minister Monja Roindefo. There we are now with their assessment that, Andry Rajoelina is using repressive force to subdue their subversive movement.
